Death’s Cure

Fight Off Death Himself. Find out How...

Death’s Cure? “What are you talking about Adam?” you ask. “How can you say such a crazy thing?” Well let me tell you avid and loyal reader of my blog. It is my FIRM belief, based on the studies I have read and how my body has PERSONALLY reacted, that Primary Antioxidants are the solution to a longer life. OK, ok longer I said, maybe not eternal. So maybe “Cure” is too strong a word. How about “Significantly Lengthen”? Is that better?

So what are “Antioxidants”? Well to understand what an Antioxidant is we first need to look at the Second part of the word, “oxidant”. Oxidant, meaning Oxygen. How does “Oxygen” behave in the body and WHY do we need an “Anti” version of it? Oxygen, as you know, is vital to life. As we breath in Oxygen and as Oxygen interacts with the cells of items in the world around us “Oxidation” occurs. This Oxidation produces a change in those cells. A slice of fruit turns brown, fresh meat becomes stinky and rancid, a cut on your skin reddens and becomes inflamed. All these are examples of “Oxidation”. It’s the result of exposure to Oxygen on the cells of those items.

In your body this death and subsequent birth of new cells is happening continuously 24/7. In general, the body handles the metabolism of oxygen quite efficiently. But roughly 1% – 2% of your cells will become damaged in the process of metabolizing the oxygen. THIS creates what are called “Free Radicals”. And it’s those pesky Free Radicals that we need to try to prevent.

Free Radicals create disease. You see Free Radicals are called “Free” because they are missing a crucial molecule. And these damaged cells do what every cell does, it tries to remain stable. So if a cell is missing critical elements it goes searching for them. Jeffrey Blumberg PhD, a researcher at Tufts University in Boston says: “These molecules will rob any molecule to quench that need.” He further states, “If free radicals simply killed a cell… (in it’s search for it’s needed element(s)),… it wouldn’t be so bad…the body could just regenerate another one. The problem is, free radicals often injure the cell, damaging the DNA, which creates the seed for disease.”

Now when a cell’s DNA is changed it becomes mutated and grows/reproduces abnormally…and quickly. Think of this as a car’s exhaust. Better yet, a car’s exhaust IN AN ENCLOSED GARAGE. The fumes are a byproduct of running the engine. In the garage they build up quickly and to deadly levels. Free Radicals are a byproduct of normal cell function just like the exhaust to engine analogy above.

Ok, so why is this a problem you ask? Our body IS that ENCLOSED GARAGE!! It’s a problem because we no longer live in Eden where the air was fresh, the water was pure, the food was free of harmful chemicals, and no one put “crap” like smoke, or drugs, or alcohol, or fast food into their bodies. In a pristine world our bodies would get the antioxidants they needed to fight off the small amount of free radical damage being created. But in today’s world we are BOMBARDED with Free Radical causing agents. And today’s poor food supply is not enough to keep up with the antioxidant demand. So the Free Radicals build up, AND build up, AND BUILD up, AND BUILD UP until…BAMMMM!!! Cancer, or Heart Disease, or Rheumatoid Arthritis, or etc, etc, etc forms. Disease. Disease is created.

So…

Antioxidants are nutrients (vitamins and minerals) as well as enzymes (proteins in your body) that assist in chemical reactions to prevent or lessen Free Radicals. Antioxidants are the “Cops” and Free Radicals are the “Robbers”.

Now that the groundwork for the discussion has been laid I will delve into the Antioxidants themselves. The types, the complications with getting them into your system, and how you can attain ETERNAL LIFE!!!! (Well, OK, I guess we established it above…a LONGER LIFE!!! Forgive my enthusiasm please. I just LOVE this stuff.)

All this will be discussed in my Next Post. Sorry folks you’ll just have to wait for the cliffhanger. Don’t worry though it won’t be long…

Next Issue…Death’s Cure, Part II (or Secondary Antioxidants vs. Primary Antioxidants. The Eternal Battle Between Good vs. Better)

Better Than Organic. What Is It?

Organic. What does that mean? Everyone nowadays talks about it. Everyone wants it. But what does that actually mean? Well not very much it turns out. Organic simply means that the grower, farmer, or backyard gardener didn’t use any herbicides or pesticides. “That’s IT??”, you ask. Yup. That’s it. It doesn’t mean that there was no ground water contamination, or rain water contamination, or soil contamination, or even handling contamination. It simply means that no one sprayed any, and insert your media buzzword here, on the food AT the farm. So think about that for a minute. Think about ALL the processes that occur AFTER the growing and harvesting phase of your “organic” food. Scary isn’t it? Did you get that same chill up your spine I did?

GoSlimFL.com

Most of us don’t even think about all the various “creepy crawlies” that could be contaminating our food in this highly processed and “Big Farm” business world. Most don’t WANT to think on it for fear of never wanting to eat ever again. So we instead read the label, see it says “organic”, buy it, eat it, and move on about our merry day. That’s all well and good for our food supply. It’s nearly impossible to eliminate ALL the contaminants from them. But you DON’T have to suffer this with your natural Supplements or Vitamins. The ability of that industry to screen out their tainted ingredients is much easier than in the food industry. And it’s why some companies choose to utilize “Better Than Organic” standards for their products. Symmetry Direct is one such company.

Symmetry utilizes this “Better Than Organic” strategy in ALL their ingredients. Even the water they use. How many of you now consume bottled water exclusively? Almost all of us, right? Cities have pumped SOOOO much crap into our water supply that it has become mostly undrinkable. Add to that all the old, rusty piping our water runs through just to get to us. So if your buddy handed you a bottle of water and said “Don’t worry I ran this through a Water Softener, then did a 5 part filtration process on it, then ran it through Reverse Osmosis, then ran it under a UV Light, and finally Flash Pasteurized it.” You’d say man you’re crazy! That’s A LOT of work for just water!! Yes it is, but it’s EXACTLY how Symmetry handles just the water it uses to formulate it’s products. And what it does to scan all the ingredients they include in their products is JUST as good. If any ingredient tests come back with a positive screen testing for contaminants like pesticides, or heavy metals IT’S REJECTED and sent back. It’s truly how you create “Better Than Organic” supplement products and it’s what separates Symmetry from the others.

I’ve personally been taking High Quality, Pharmaceutical Grade Supplements for over 15 years. Trust me there is a difference between that type of product and the run of the mill, Wal-Mart brand. Yeah Wal-Mart’s are cheap, but their quality is terrible. And with Supplements you need the highest quality ingredients you can get to actually do the work properly. Otherwise you’re just wasting your money and who wants to do that in this economy? Not I my friends. Not I.

Here is a video of Dr. Mark Crapo talking about “Better Than Organic” and what it means. He creates Symmetry’s products and is Passionate about quality. Always remember Quality Ingredients Equal Quality Supplements. Don’t settle for anything less. I don’t.

40% Of Deaths From The Top 5 Causes Of Death Are Preventable!

Recently reported by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) is that 40 % of deaths that occur from the top 5 leading causes of death are in fact preventable. So, you may be asking yourself what are the top 5 leading causes of death in the US?  Well, sadly, they are heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory  diseases, stroke, and unintentional injuries.

The things that at least three of these have in common, heart disease, cancer, and stroke, are the common risk factors that include being overweight, eating an unhealthy diet, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, tobacco use, lack of physical activity…just to name a few.

Well, I am always looking at what I can do to prevent disease and one of the things I added to my regular diet and supplement regimen is the supplement called Resveratrol.

Resveratrol is an antioxidant that is found in plants, most notably in the skins of red grapes. It is a long known oriental medicine used to treat heart and liver diseases.  Most recently it has become known as  “the French Paradox”. Why? Well it’s been shown that the French, who eat diets high in fat but drink moderate amounts of red wine, have a lower incidence of heart disease. Research indicates it is a result of the resveratrol found in the red wine.  It is also shown to be beneficial in the prevention of cancer.  In a 2007 report from the Cancer Biology & Therapy findings from test tube and animals studies show resveratrol to affect all stages of carcinogenesis. In 2008 there were 2 studies that show resveratrol to be particularly helpful in preventing breast and prostrate cancer.

Resveratrol is also an anti-aging product that many people claim makes them feel and look younger.  It has antibiotic properties so it helps to rid the body of toxins and stimulates the SiRT1 gene that works to reduce fat stores in the body.

While drinking a glass of red wine daily might be healthy, it is unhealthy to drink alcohol in large amounts.  Also, the most recent research on resveratrol states that the amount of the antioxidant you would consume through normal food and drink may not be enough to provide the effects shown in the animal studies.

Therefore, the product that I use and recommend is Genesis found here.  One ounce of Genesis contains the amount of resveratrol found in ten bottles of red wine.  It also contains the patented X’tranol-24 which is an herbal blend designed to impede the production of free radicals in your body for a full 24 hours.  Free radicals are cells that can cause disease.  It also includes ellagic acid from pomegranates, another cancer fighting antioxidant, and a blend of 18 other herbs that come straight from the bible that are said to promote health and well-being….which is the reason for the name…Genesis.

I firmly believe we need to look to all natural products and remedies that will aid our health, rather than rely on medicines that cause more side-effects than can be listed.  I also feel that there are certain organizations that would rather we use these medicines and not believe in the benefits of natural products. After all, they are not part of the billion dollar health industry that doctors receive incentives for prescribing.  I am not a conspiracy theorist typically but I cannot dispute the benefits that I and many friends and family have experienced from using this and other natural products. Products that helped us come off of or avoid prescription medications.

I hope you will take a step in the right direction and see what you can do for yourself to help prevent one or all of the leading causes of death!  I, personally, am looking forward to a long, healthy life:)

Losing Weight Starts With Eating Right

I have had a few people ask me how do I lose weight?  I am working out and eating better but nothing is working!  What am I doing wrong?  Well, at that point I would ask what does eating better mean?

Most people eat more calories than they realize.  I cannot count the times that I have had people tell me they know they are eating great, but when we look at the diary of what they had eaten throughout the course of a week, they math does not add up.  I strongly recommend to you, if you are not doing it already, if you want to lose weight, that you track everything you put in your mouth in effort to hold yourself accountable.  Write down the good, the bad, and the ugly.  Only then, will you know where you need to improve, and only then will you succeed on a long term basis.

There are many apps that you can use that are free or nearly free and will help you track throughout the day.  I like the Live Strong app really well.  Also, I recently switched gyms to Anytime Fitness and they have an awesome program called Anytime Health.  These apps not only track your calories, but also other nutritional facts so that once you have the calorie part down you can really target your food choices so that you stay in healthy ranges for fat, carbs, and protein.  Also, it is good to know about sodium, sugars, and other facts.  Once again, this is not just about losing weight but also about healthy living and that means treating our body the best way that we can.  If you own a BMW, chances are you are not using the cheap gas, right?  You are using premium gas and synthetic oil.  The same is true for us….if you want to be top shelf, you cannot fill yourself with anything less than the best!

If you are looking at your day and thinking that you are starving and this is just not worth it to be hungry all the time, take a closer look.  I have said this many times…what you are eating makes a difference.  Try and choose foods that are filling and lower in calories.  For example, if you are on the run and need to grab lunch out try a 6 inch Subway sandwich, minus the cheese and mayo of course, and instead of chips and or cookies, do the apple slices.  You will still feel full afterwards and saved yourself over 200 calories.  Another option I like is Chik Fil A.  I love the grilled chicken sandwich with a fruit cup.

OK, so let’s say it is dinner time, and you are trying to decide what to cook.  Think about your plate in quarters and fill one quarter with a lean protein and the other three quarter with veggies.  Vegetables do not have to be boring.  You can stir fry some frozen vegetables with cooking spray and a dash of soy sauce and it is delicious.  I also like steamed broccoli with a sprinkling of seasoning salt or Mrs. Dash, or even some garlic.  Try two veggies like broccoli as mentioned before and also some carrots.  Another option is to roast seasonal vegetables in the oven…squash, turnips, onions, etc are delicious and takes little preparation.  An oldie but goody is to add a side salad to your meal, but be careful not to load it up with a fattening dressing and instead splash some vinegar and a small dab of olive oil and a little salt and pepper.  I also like to top a salad with salsa for a southwestern flair.

The foundation for losing weight is eating right.  Your diet is more important than your workout.  If you can’t do both…counting calories and starting a new fitness routine….start with the calorie counting first.  Once you are comfortable with a better eating plan, then amp it up with some activity and boost your weight loss potential.

It is Sunday evening and if you are waiting for tomorrow to start eating right, stop! Think about starting right now.  Even if you ate horribly all day, start now making a good choice with the next thing you put in your mouth because sometimes tomorrow will never come.

Do you choose to…

Do you choose to simply know the path, or do you choose to walk it?

I do not know who said this, but it certainly relates to the topic of this blog.  I read and review nutritional information, fitness information, and motivational/psychological information everyday in effort to be as knowledgeable as I can about what works and what doesn’t in the quest for healthy living and weight loss.  The thing is….I can know everything and feed it to anyone interested, but the question is what do YOU want to do with it?  I want to WALK IT!!

Looking Good Is Feeling Good

I am the mother of two kids, and for 15 years of marriage, I rarely spent any money on myself.  Instead, I bought clothes and toys for the kids and new items for the house.  Buying things for myself seemed selfish.  Little did I realize that this selfless act was actually hurting me because not only was I neglecting how I looked fashion-wise, I was letting myself go physically.  So, you have to be a little bit selfish and a little bit vain, if you want to stay on top of the way you look and ultimately the way you feel.

Rewarding myself throughout my weight loss journey, and even now as I maintain my weight, I feel is one of the things that helps me stay on course. How many times do you reward yourself with food?  Probably a lot.  Most people who are overweight grew up with food being used as a reward. Food can sometimes be used to fill emotional voids such as to soothe anxiety, cure loneliness or boredom, or make you feel better when you are sad.  To get away from bad habits like these, it is good to keep your focus on other things.  Not that you want to become super vain, but attention paid on how you look will help keep your mind set on the goal.

If you have not lost a lot of weight yet, maybe you are not ready to buy new clothes.  If that is the case, why not try going for a new hairstyle.  Also, a new pair of shoes or some new accessories, like jewelry, can be your best friend.  You will be surprised on how splurging on these things will make you feel pretty. When you feel pretty, or handsome or cool (or manly for the guys), you will be less likely to chow down that candy bar.  Feeling like you look good changes your whole outlook for the day just as the opposite is true.

Sometimes I think we need to be selfish in order to be the best we can be for others. Let me give an example. I feel it is a little selfish to spend time at the gym rather than time with the kids. In the long run though, it makes me a better Mom. I am more healthy and fit so I will live longer and be able to keep up with my kids now and with their kids later!  I also have less stress when I workout regularly.  Now that the kids are older I also feel I am instilling better habits in them.  I try to get them involved too!  Every Monday is DVD workout day with my son and he picks the workout.  He likes the Jillian Michael and P90X workouts. It is fun; sometimes we get a little bit silly, and it is great that he is getting some exercise at the same time.

So, set some small goals, figure out what rewards will keep you motivated, and don’t feel guilty about spending some time and money on yourself.  Trust me, it’s a very good investment.  Remember, YOU are your best friend and YOU have to take care and love yourself FIRST before you can give love to others!
